fall home maintenance tipsHome Maintenance Tips Prep For Autumn

Ready or not, summer is coming to an end and Fall weather will soon be upon us! Bring out all the pumpkin spice everything, the Fall-scented candles, windows open – at Dani Beyer Real Estate, we’re here for it. And we’re also here to give you some home maintenance tips to tackle this season so you’re prepared for colder weather.

Get your mind out of the gutter…er, in the gutter. It’s time to clean out those bad boys to make sure there’s room to catch the falling leaves…so you can clean them again later this fall. We know, we know, it’s a pain. And depending on how high up your gutters are, it could be a little dangerous. So maybe consider hiring a professional company this year to take care of that headache? We highly recommend A Cleaner Image!

To the window! To the wall! Sorry we got that song in your head now. But for real, are your windows ready?

  • You may need to change out summer screens to cool weather storm windows.
  • And make sure to inspect any loose window frames and repair them before the cool breezes start coming through.
  • Weather stripping or caulking around the windows may be needed as well to prevent drafts and help cut down on those heating bills.

It’s getting hot in here…we really need to clean up our song choices. (Also, squirrel, did you know Nelly is going to be on Dancing With the Stars this season? Yasssss!) Okay, focus. What we’re trying to say is, you need to check up on your furnace. The last thing you want is for that first frigid day of autumn to show up, and you can’t get your pilot light going. So it’s a good idea to have an HVAC specialist come take a look and make sure your heating system is good to go before cold weather comes through.

plumbing home maintenance tips

Don’t let your plumbing crack. Do you see what we did there? In all seriousness, no one wants to deal with leaky or bursting pipes. So make sure everything is tightened and well-insulated. And definitely make sure you know where your water shutoff valve is in case things get crazy.

Get out, leave, right now. Oh, JoJo – was she a one-hit wonder? Anywho, let’s talk yardwork. Grass may seem to die in the fall, but did you know the roots are actually growing deeper to prep for winter? We didn’t either. We looked it up. BUT, that means it’s the best time to fertilize your lawn.

In addition, you should take a look at any tree limbs that are close to your roof or power lines. Heavy ice and snow could cause some damage, so prune them back (which also helps with healthy growth in the spring!).

We could have given you a super long list, but we didn’t want to overwhelm, and we were running out of puns so… Also, if you’re thinking, “Thanks for the home maintenance tips, but I just don’t even know where I’d find the time to do all these things,” take advantage of the recommended vendors on our website. You can find anything you need from this list!

Now, go grab that PSL, put out the pumpkins and mums and enjoy a beautiful autumn in the midwest!
