Stop by the Southwest X Central Street Fest during First Fridays this Friday Evening. The event is a community art and music event in support of Imagine That!, an innovative creative arts studio for individuals with developmental disabilities. This summer’s event will mark the festival’s 4th year will showcase work and performances by both Imagine That! artists and local individual artists. There will a gallery inside the event space and a fashion show along with live music outside. Other activities will include a dunk tank, photo booth, Poppy’s Ice Cream Truck, a silent auction and much more! Free beverages and food will be provided by Boulevard Brewing Co., Door To Door Organics and Farm To Market Bread Co.

Slide the City

Saturday, August 6
All Day Event Starting at 9 a.m.
Tickets: $40

Slide the City is bringing a 1,000 foot water slide to the streets of Kansas City this Saturday. Bring the whole family to splash, play and slide over the length of three football fields. There will also be live music, food, drinks, water, and of course the biggest slip and slide ever to hit asphalt throughout the day at the event. Be sure to bring your water buckets, floaties, and water guns to spray, splash, and get all attending soaked. With your ticket, you’ll get a wristband that gives you three slides during the wave time of your choosing in the afternoon. You’ll also receive a tube, mouth guard, and a drawstring bag. This is a full day block party so come early, or stay late, to participate in all of the other activities being held at the event.

Taste of Africa Festival

Expand your world view and experience a rich day of culture at the Taste of Africa Festival on Saturday. Explore tantalizing tastes, vibrant fabrics and fashions, exotic jewels, handcrafted art, vibrant sounds, breathtaking dancing and so much more! The festival will be an epic African experience, and attendees will be able to experience Africa away from Africa in a family friendly environment. Africans from across the mid-west will converge to share their cultures with the city of Riverside, and greater Kansas City communities. This is the second annual event that will only grow over time, with this year’s event featuring a kids’ zone with 2 playgrounds, African food, live DJs and performances, African cultural dancers, a fashion show, a dance competition, a beach volleyball and soccer tournament and more.

The Festival of Butterflies

Powell Gardens’ signature festival returns starting this weekend for its 20th year. Look on in awe at hundreds of colorful, free-flying butterflies in the indoor conservatory and learn more about monarchs and other native species in two outdoor butterfly breezeways. Each day includes many kids’ activities, including storytelling, a costume parade and much more. Experts from Monarch Watch will be on site with a fantastic educational display and to offer advice on ways to protect these beautiful butterflies. Activities throughout festival weekends include a variety of kids activities, ice cream tastings, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and much more.
