Celebrate the coming of summer at an area traditional event, Old Shawnee Days. Join friends and neighbors for a weekend of fun and entertainment the whole family can enjoy. This free event at historic Shawnee Town features live music from both nationally known recording artists and great local bands, entertainment for both adults and kids, a carnival, crafts and vendors, a parade, games and contests, shopping and much more. The festival runs Thursday through Sunday, with the parade kicking off Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Lee’s Summit Downtown Days

And on the Missouri side, there’s the annual Lee’s Summit Downtown Days Festival. The Downtown Days Streets Alive Festival spans six blocks and three days in the Downtown Lee’s Summit central business district. For more than 20 years, this family-friendly festival has been hosted in the heart of Downtown Lee’s Summit. Every year, the Downtown Days committee brings in new events and activities, and this year is no exception, promising a few attractions festival-goers won’t see anywhere else. Each year, more than 90,000 people kick off the summer by attending the Downtown Days Festival. This year’s event promises live entertainment, food vendors, a carnival, craft vendors, the KCBS-sanctioned BBQ competition, delicious food and much more.

World Food & Wine Festival

The World Food & Wine Festival is back at Worlds of Fun this weekend for its second year. Sample the best of both local and international wines and hear the stories of how the wines are created. Samples include dry and sweet wines, reds, whites, sparkling, port and sherry, which go well with the food pairings menu created by Executive Chef Kevin Williams to complement the wines at each station. Participating wineries include Arcadian Moon from Higginsville, MO; Somerset Ridge from Paola, KS; Belvoir Winery from Liberty, MO; Les Bourgeois from Rocheport, MO; California Wine Trail from California; and Wines of the World from Italy, Spain and Argentina. The food pairing menu includes a variety of delicious bites such as BBQ shrimp & grits, coconut chicken with mango & pineapple chutney, mini 3-cheese macaroni bites, a mini caramel cheesecake and more.

The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head

Check out the Adventures of Mr. Potato Head opening this weekend at Crown Center for a hand-on experience your kids are sure to love. This exciting exhibit created by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with Hasbro features Mr. Potato Head as he becomes an explorer, scientist, and adventurer with a change of his “parts.” In addition to building a variety of essential academic skills, the exhibit encourages children to welcome new experiences with confidence, curiosity and humor, to think about all they can be and do, and to always respect themselves and others. The exhibit is free and will remain open through the duration of the summer until September 5th.

Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life

And for those interested in science and the human body, Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life is also opening at Union Station this weekend. An all-new exhibition revealing the human body’s transformation through time, the exhibit showcases more than 100 real, preserved human specimens. Never before seen in Kansas City, Dr. von Hagens’ Body Worlds exhibitions have been seen by 40 million people worldwide. Body Worlds delivers enriching content that informs and motivates visitors to consider the health of their bodies in life-changing ways.” In the exhibition, visitors will follow the human body through the span of time and learn about the latest findings in anatomy, longevity and health.
