Kansas City Young Audiences production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr.

July 31, 7-8:30 PM

Any Disney lovers in the house? Come out and bring the little ones to support the young performers of Kansas City as they stage a junior version of The Little Mermaid. Thirty student singers, dancers, and actors put their spin on the classic tale. With only $5 tickets and free admission for children under five, it’s a fun and inexpensive way to keep the performing arts alive in Kansas City. Crown Center’s WeekEnder & The Wizard of Oz

August 1; event begins at 5 pm, live music at 6, outdoor movie at 9

Shrug off the workweek at Crown Center this Friday with live music, an assortment of food trucks, Kansas City vendors, and a night under the stars and city lights with an outdoor showing of The Wizard of Oz. 2014 Festival of Butterflies

August 1-10, 9 AM-6 PM

Kansas City’s annual Festival of Butterflies returns this year for its 18th anniversary at Powell Gardens. Learn about monarch butterflies, take part in a caterpillar hunt, a catch-and-release with butterfly netting, and dress up for the costume parade and caterpillar float (11 AM daily). In addition, there’s face painting, flowerpot painting, and the chance to create your own butterfly wings. While the festival runs during daylight hours, there are also two chances to enjoy Powell Gardens at twilight: August 2, 7-9 PM; Family Night, An Evening with the Butterflies, August 9, 7-10 PM; An Evening Escape, Monarchs & Mojitos (perfect date night for those 21 and older!) A Night Full of Laughs at Fountain City Sketch Comedy

August 2, 9, 16, 10-11 PM

The Kansas City Improv Company debuts its brand-new sketch comedy hour, written and performed by some of the best comedic talent Kansas City has to offer. The 17+ show will be held at the new Kick Comedy Theatre off Pennsylvania Avenue, and is sure to have you rolling in your seats. R.E.A.D. to a Dog Program at Olathe Public Library

August 2, 1:30-2:30 PM

Does your child have a favorite book he or she loves to read? Boost your child’s reading confidence and get a kick-start for school by joining Kansas City Pets for Life at the Indian Creek Branch Library this Saturday. Share your love for animals and watch your child read aloud to one of their many service dogs. This free event is limited and is available on a first-come-first serve basis, so come early. You don’t want your child to miss out on Reading to a Dog!
